The Advantages of Powder Coating

March 16, 2021

Industrial pumps and equipment operate in some of the most extreme working conditions. Over time certain physical impacts, moisture, chemicals, and ultraviolet light can cause corrosion and deterioration of parts, resulting in at worst a breakdown or at best a beaten down appearance. To combat this process Anderson Process offers powder coating finishes to skids and systems.

Powder Coatings is a highly durable finishing that are made from a melted combination of a base polymer resin system along with curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives that are then cooled and ground into a uniform powder.  The application process uses electrostatic spray deposition to allow the powder to stick to a metal substance, the spray gun applies an electrostatic charge to the powder particles that are then attracted to the grounded part. Afterwards the parts enter a curing oven where the coating chemically reacts to produce long molecular chains, resulting in a high cross-link density that is very resistant to breakdown.

Along with being resistant to physical damage powder coating is a simple process to comply with environmental standards. There are no polluting chemical solvents or organic compounds, there are no harmful chemicals released into the air and produces less overall waste than a standard spray paint. The waste that is produced can be disposed of safely in a landfill.

Below are images from a skid base that Anderson Process powder coated. To promote better adhesion and increased chemical resistance these pump bases were sandblasted and then they were coated with a zinc-based primer. A top powder coating is then applied resulting in a finished super durable surface. This results in more effective system that retains its look for a much longer time compared to material with a standard paint.

The pictures below with three bases shows the different stages in the process. From left to right: raw steel after fabrication, sand blasted, and finished powder coating.
